USAID Pilot Reforestation Project In Manus 07 Apr 2015
The people of the Tienkar Local Level government in Manus Province are the first to start up a pilot reforestation project.
According to PNG Climate Change Advocator Latin Ndrihin a sum of US$200 000 was funded by the USAid to plant the native trees that have gone extinct through the intense logging activities and the El Nino in 1997.
He said this project will be beneficial to the people as it will help to restore their current livelihood as well for the future generation, and also is an act of response to the impact of Climate Change in Manus province.
Mr NDrihin said currently the people are lacking materials to build houses and canoes to go out fishing.
He said this project is a two year project that targets to plant more than 10 000 trees and will be rolled out into other electorates if it is successful.
Meanwhile Mr. NDrihin is adamant that giving awareness to school children on the issues of climate change is an effective way to addressing the impact of climate in Papua New Guinea.
Advocator NDrihin said he has given awareness through documentary films and conducted quizzes on the issues of climate change to more than 25 schools in Manus province.
He said such awareness to rural schools is important because the students miss out on much information on the events of climate change in and around the world.
Mr. NDrihin assured the students as future leaders and must act now by planting trees as one of the measures to adapt to the impact of climate.
