Women Leaders Expressed Concern 11 Mar 2015
Two Women Village Court officials who were among their male counterparts attending a workshop have expressed concern that children’s rights are not respected in both the urban and rural communities.
Ms. Genge Koi and Regina Kerua were among the sixteen male village court officials who have attended a two-day workshop organised and funded by Unicef in the Western Highlands province.
Both women have expressed that child labour is a major problem where children are forced to do heavy work under extreme pressure.
Both women leaders said parents sometimes force their children to do hard labour with not much recognition, award or appreciation of what they do.
In the urban communities, especially at major busy shopping areas such as the markets and bus stopschildren are forced to carry extreme loads of cargo to the markets and bustops.
The also reported that Asian shops operating in the province employ under-age children to do cooking, washing, carrying cargos and other related work with little pay.
