FLOODS AFFECT 8000 PEOPLE IN MEKEO 14 Mar 2013
More than 8,000 people in the north Mekeo area in the Central province are now affected by rising flood waters, with threats of water borne diseases and other outbreaks likely to occur, following days of heavy downpour. Eight houses from Amiaka village were reported to have been washed away by strong currents while food gardens and roads are submerged in water, estimated at two meters high. Schools have been temporarily closed including an aid post which is said to be on the verge of collapsing. Central Province Disaster coordinator Kevin Unobo says cemeteries have been inundated, whereby sweeping away human remains. This is the first villagers have seen flood waters of such magnitude and are bracing themselves for the worst. Mr. Unobo who returned from the area yesterday says he will compile a report for the National Disaster Office and the Central Governor before they can respond, hopefully by next week. The main need for the people right now is drinking water and food rations.
