PRIME MINISTER ONEIL WANTS POLICE TO IMPLEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE MV RABAUL QUEEN INQUIR 21 Jan 2013
By Glenda Popot.
Prime Minister Peter ONeil has slammed the Royal Papua New Guinea Police Constabulary for their inefficiency in implementing recommendations from a Commission of Inquiry Report into the fatal sinking of the MV Rabaul Queen in February 2012.
The report was presented to the Chief Secretary to Government Manasupe Zurenuoc last year, who than handed it over to relevant authorities, police being one of them, to implement the recommendations, among them; to arrest the owner of Rabaul Shipping Peter Sharp.
In an interview with FM 100 News, Assistant Police Commissioner Operations Simon Kauba says police is in need of funds to send their investigators out to the Provinces to verify reports before recommendations can be implemented.
But, Prime Minister Peter ONeil says this is a lame excuse from the police department, as investigations have already been completed and compiled in the report presented to them, and they are to enforce the recommendations.
He says if there is work to be done, than the Police department must ensure this is carried out immediately and stop running to the Government each time with excuses of funding.
Mr. ONeil says there are police personnel in the provinces concerned so why cannot their services be utilized, further adding that the Government is more than willing to assist with logistics like airlines tickets if need be.
He says police men and women are already being paid a salary to do their job, and its time they move away from the mentality of wanting more funding from the Government to carry out a directive.
The Prime Minister says we owe it to the families of those passengers that died in the fatal sinking, and the people of PNG, to ensure justice prevails, adding that the COI reports recommendations be implemented immediately.
